Credibility is all when raising money. I think for instance Elon Musk would have less of a problem raising a billion than would Tito because of the credibility Musk has garnered from all his successful launches.

The key will be for Tito to demonstrate to a range of bodies that the project will definitely happen once their money comes forward. I am not sure there is enough detail there yet. I guess that's why the next two years will be so important.

Given they are going to be so close to Mars (just 100 miles) is there not prospect of firing a small lander to the planet to maybe land a webcam and plaque. It would add hugely to the mystique of the mission I think.
